January
and February
Carnival.
Lent is approaching when
you should abstain from some indulgence for forty days and forty nights
(pancakes possibly?). Carnival is celebrated around Shrove Tuesday
(Feb 5th) with many events in January and February as a time to let
your hair down before Lent. A public procession or parade is
usually included and many activities take place. It is of course a
good reason to dress up in elaborate (or home made costumes) and have a public
street party. For those of you with children in school, you will
be dressing up your children for many events and invited to watch them sing.
The local council is
holding a Carnival Groups Competition at Tivoli World. It takes place on the
20th and 27th January and 3rd and
10th February with a carnival singing competition with a grand final
on 3rd February. Many prizes are on offer. If you go
along in your dressing up clothes you will get into the park free
and you can wander to the two main squares to watch the
festivities.
If you want to enjoy the ambiance into the evening -
there is the annual Drag Queen Parade in the Pueblo on Friday 8th February.
The dresses have an upper limit on their size but at 4 metres there should still
be quite a show!
If you fancied
celebrating carnival in BIG STYLE then get yourself over to Cadiz. The carnival there
is considered one of the best in Spain.
Semana
Blanca.
How civilised,
a week off to go ski-ing. Semana Blanca falls this year between
23rd February to 2nd March. It is a local
holiday in Andalucia and always incorporates the public holiday on
28th February which is Dia de Andalucia (Andalucia Day).
It is celebrated to commemorate the successful referendum held to grant
autonomy (self government) to the regions while still “recognising the
indissoluble unity of the Spanish nation”. Andalucians are
fiercely proud of their region and their motto is “Andalucia por si, para Espana
y la humanidad” (Andalucia by herself, for Spain and for
humankind).
